"LIGHT" an exhibition of works on paper and micro light objects by Ruairí O'Brien

A big thank you to all who made it to the opening of my "LIGHT" exhibition of "works on paper" and "micro LIGHT objects" last Saturday night in Chemnitz. In the photo posted, you can see a selection from the "Dark Sky" series I recently completed during my time on the lovely Greek island of Kea for the "Rethink the Night" workshop. Kea is famous among astronomers and lighting experts for the "starry skyscape" one can enjoy due to the extreme lack of light pollution. The exhibition is running until the 07.01.2016. Last saturday night, “LIGHT”, an exhibition of my “works on paper and light objects” opened in the Gallery OBEN, Chemnitz, Germany. The paintings of “light and darkness”, the installations, the urban light sculptures/ street lighting and public buildings are not part of the exhibition.
However, in the drawings one can see where the large-scale public works, such as the lighting of the market square in Freiberg, the "Hologram façade" in Jena or the war memorial in Zeithain, have been inspired or indeed tested in the “mind beforehand”.

Ausstellung innerhalb UNESCO International Year of Light

Bardinale Africa - Exhibition of watercolours on Light and Darkness by Ruairí O'Brien

Exhibition of fragile watercolours by Ruairí O'Brien on "Light and Darkness" opened on 29.10. in Dresden, Germany as part of the international literature festival "Bardinale Africa".
The exhibition was opened under candle light conditions.
It will be running untill end of December 2015.

ORNO Art festival Dresden - Garnison Church Lighting - Ruairí O'Brien

Here a shot of the lighting scenes I created for the opening night of the ORNÖ art festival in Dresden. The catholic Garison Church in the Neustadt was the site used for the kick off events, dance and sound performances. It was a great architectural object to work with, surrounded by enough wonderful darkness to make a low budget stretch a long way.

Cities, art and light - Lecture from Ruairí O'Brien at the Hansa Lighting conference 2015

In my talk given to the HANSE Light Conference in June of this year, I emphasized the importance of looking at the works of artists when thinking about the importance of light in the city. Artists are obviously great observers of light and in such they capture light and shadow in their own unique way. There are great examples, Hopper being one of my favorites. I always include Hopper in my talks with students of lighting design and architecture wherever possible. I plead for them to go into the museums and galleries and search out their own “light” paintings. When contemplating light at night, and how one should light our cities, I always suggest that students first take a stroll during the day and see what the sun does to the buildings and the spaces between. One should observe carefully how the architects have designed the buildings, the squares and streets to interact with the sun to create the shadows that give form to space. Following intensive daylight observations it is easier for designers to use the forms and materials once recognised to create an appropriate light and shadow concept for the nightscape.

„Architekten reisen gern. Auch im Kopf. Man könnte über die Bilder reden, die dabei entstehen. Aber wie man oft genug an der Hochschule oder Universität gehört hat: Lass die Bilder für sich reden. Das eine oder andere Foto wird Sie persönlich ansprechen. Sie reisen mit ins Bild hinein, Sie sind sozusagen mit vor Ort, im Kopfkino.
Bei dieser Sommerschau-Ausstellung geht es nicht allein um die Qualität der Fotos, sondern auch um die Persönlichkeit hinter dem Instrument und dem Betrachter. Bilder sind in diesem Sinne auch Selbstporträts, Selfies auf Neudeutsch. Ein jedes eröffnet ein Fenster zu demjenigen, der die Kamera gehalten hat, der entschieden hat, so eine Reise zu unternehmen, der entschieden hat, dieses Foto zu schießen, der das oder dies bemerkt, wahrgenommen und für die Ewigkeit eingefangen, die Zeit eingefroren hat.
Das ist alles sehr merkwürdig und so einfach zu gleich, tief ergreifend  und einfach schön oder einfach spaßig. Momente, wie das Leben… hoch-philosophisch.
Ein anderes Thema bei dieser Ausstellung ist der Beruf Architekt.
Was ist das für ein Mensch, der so etwas macht… Architektur? Wir zusammen teilen diese Ausstellung, wir begegnen uns in privaten Momenten des Lebens, wir sind aber individuell. Das ist immer die Widersprüchlichkeit des Architekten. Ein Individuum, das Teams führt, Verantwortung übernimmt, aber leider oft alleine dasteht, wenn es Ärger gibt.
Vielleicht sollten wir uns merken: solche Anlässe wie heute zeigen, dass wir, obwohl wir unsere Freiheit als Freiberufler genießen, nicht alleine da stehen. Denn es gibt auch andere, die wie wir, für den Geist der Architekten stehen und z.B. als Angestellte, als Amtsinhaber oder als Unternehmer diesen Beruf mit uns teilen.

Foto-Ausstellung: Architekten „On the Road“

Vom 25. Juni bis 26. Juli im Haus der Architekten in Dresden und vom 4. bis 27. August im Rahmen des Architektursommers Sachsen 2015 in der Landesdirektion Sachsen in Leipzig.

Die von Ruairí O´Brien konzipierte und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Architektenkammer Sachsen organisierte Sommerausstellung im Haus der Architekten hat anlässlich des diesjährigen 5. Jubiläums Mitglieder und Gäste dazu aufgerufen ein persönliches Foto von einer Reise einzusenden.

Dreißig Architekten sind diesem Aufruf gefolgt und beteiligten sich mit ihren ganz persönlichen Fotos. Die unterschiedlichen Fotos, teilweise mit kurzen Texten, die einen persönlichen Bezug zum Bild schaffen, zeigen verschiedenste Teile der Welt aus dem Blickwinkel von Architektinnen und Architekten.

Light in Literature - A workshop by Ruairí O'Brien

Light in Literature.

Last week I gave a workshop on Light in Literature. I started with a short lecture about the beauty and science of light and the art of working with light.
I explained, using examples from my lighting design and architectural work, what we believe light to be from a technical and scientific point of view. I presented basic theories of the psychology of perception and explained how they may have influenced my own work.

I used examples from famous works of literature to demonstrate where light had been used to describe an atmosphere as part of the overall dramatic architecture of the story telling or where light was used as a metaphor to deliver a message on a subliminal level. I also discussed with the participants the real work situation of the writer in his space and his personal relationship to his light from daylight and the candle through to the present day use of LED's. 

In the practical session that followed I demonstrated different types of light sources. 
We discussed the atmospheric and technical qualities of each of the light sources on display.

In the third part of the workshop, I asked the group to work with a text I chose from Albert Camus’s “The Stranger”. After the text was analyzed and discussed, we acted out a short scene with the use of the light sources provided. The work was photo documented and a short film was recorded.
